Off the Wall

John McCain talked about obesity of America's youth in the Presidential debate. McCain mentioned promoting more fitness in the schools. This is a great idea but in my opinion, the youth of today doesn't want a fitness class in schools. Doing jumping jacks and push ups is not fun for the youth of today. It may have worked in the 50's but it does not work today. I suggest making fitness fun in the schools by having skateboarding, mountain biking, rock climbing, inline skating, and BMX in all schools. You should also be able to choose what sport you prefer instead of being forced to play baseball , dodgeball, or basketball in gym class. If you want to control obesity in this country, build more skateparks, offer alternative sports in the schools that kids of today enjoy, and stop harassing skaters who ride the streets. That's a start. At least someone is trying. Check out http://www.skatepass.com/ that is promoting skateboarding in the schools. It's a great idea. It's the new PE

That is the truth. PE should be wide open to include all physical activities not just organized sports. Schools only have "gym" twice a week now. When we were coming up it was everyday. No wonder kids are fat. Skateboarding helped me drop over 40 pounds. Kickball or kick push? I'll kick push.
Excellent post Marc.
